Independent philanthropist, Steve has always had a strong passion for sustainable development, and in 2000 established The Charitable Foundation (TCF). TCF is one of the largest private overseas aid organizations in Australia. It aims to provide life-changing interventions reaching as many people as possible with special emphasis on targeting the poorest of the poor. TCF is active in East and Central Africa and parts of Asia supporting projects that provide sustainable futures for the community such as clean water, tuberculosis eradication, housing, agricultural development and famine relief.
A strong proponent of the study of peace, Steve is also the Founder and Executive Chairman of the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) (www.economicsandpeace.org) an independent, non-partisan, non-profit research organization dedicated to promoting a better understanding the social and economic factors that develop a more peaceful society. IEP particularly aims to quantify the economic benefits of peace. The Institute’s groundbreaking research includes the Global Peace Index, which is recognized by international organizations, governments, scholars and experts as the world’s leading measurement of national peacefulness. The Institute also produces country-specific analysis including the United States Peace Index.
Steve serves on a number of Advisory Boards including the International Crisis Group (ICG), the Alliance for Peacebuilding and the OECD’s Global Project on Measuring Progress of Societies, and is an International Trustee of the World Council of Religions for Peace.
